You are allowed to set up to 50 keywords or phrases to rake the tweet-o-sphere for and email you recaps either daily or every twelve hours.

The keyword tips are the same as for Google Alerts. The cool thing about monitoring Twitter chatter is that it has a very real-time element to it. If ill will is being spread, you may have the capability to join the ongoing conversation and correct the record or counter the conversation when it is at its most toxic and influential to your business reputation.

LinkedIn Signal

Signal is a tool presently under development by LinkedIn in conjunction with Twitter, using a similar search on discussions groups, shares and posted answers. Access it by logging into LinkedIn and going to www.linkedin.com/signal. This is a bit clunky with the filters and for most results, look up your name and company without the filters box selected. This is especially useful for product launches or branding efforts you might have to see if there is a buzz on LinkedIn among professionals. Unfortunately, the search box appears to have no Boolean capability to add multiple search words separated by commas or expressions like ‘+’ or ‘OR’.

If you’re in the consulting or professional services field this may be one where you save your searches and check regularly back, as these are folks who traffic LinkedIn. This is still in beta and isn’t particularly advertised by LinkedIn, and has a limited universe of professionals (those in LinkedIn who allow public view of their discussions) and will tell you more about trending topics than give you an overall overview about what is being said regarding your business. I’d recommend playing with it to see if it is useful to you, but use the alerts in Google and Social Oomph to monitor the majority of chatter.

1 – There are over two billion people online
A study by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) discovered that the number of internet users across the globe has now exceeded two billion.
In 2010 alone, more than 226 million people came online for the first time. Market researcher IDC predicts that by 2015, an astounding 2.7 billion people worldwide will be online.
That’s about 40% of the world’s population, which is a lot of potential customers.

2 – 38 million of them are in the UK
If your business doesn’t want to target international business, then your boss may not care about the rapidly growing number of internet users in the developing world. But even so, the numbers for the UK market are compelling.
Research from the Office for National Statistics shows that 38 million UK adults used the web last year. Of those, more than 30 million accessed the internet at least once a day.
You’d pay a lot of money to have a shop on a street that had that kind of footfall!

3 – 31 million are actively shopping online
The ONS study found that 31 million people purchased goods or services online in the 12 months to August 2010.
What’s more, the higher their income, the more likely they are to use the web. The research body found that 98% of people with an income exceeding £41,600 used the internet. That compares to just 69% of adults with an income of less than £10,399.
So, many of your potential customers are using the internet to shop – and the wealthier they are, the more likely they are to do so.

4 – These customers spend hours online
On average, an online adult in the UK spends 22 hours and 15 minutes on the internet each month, according to the UK Online Measurement Company (UKOM).
That’s an increase of 65% compared to just three years ago. Interestingly, 22.7% of that time is spent accessing social networks and blogs, showing just how important a social marketing campaign is alongside your SEO efforts.

5 – People spend billions online
Despite the economic woes, spending online continues to grow. In August 2011 alone, UK shoppers spent £5.2 billion on the web, according to the IMRG/Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index.
That’s 14% more than in the same month, the previous year.

6 – 93% of online experiences begin with a search engine
So, people are spending a lot of time and money online. But does that necessarily mean that you need SEO?
The answer is a resounding ‘yes’. A study by Forrester from 2006 found that 93% of all internet traffic comes from a search engine. You cannot afford to be missing out on that many potential visitors.

7 – Google dominates all
Although you should rank for all search engines, it makes sense to prioritise Google.
Google received more than 92% of search engine traffic in 2010, according to Statcounter.com. The runner up, Bing, gained just 3.17% of search engine traffic.

In recent years a number of illicit techniques have grown up to artificially manipulate a website's ranking. These techniques are referred to as spamming or sometimes "Black hat" techniques. The "black hat" description refers to the fact that in the old western movies the bad guys always wore black hats. The core of any spamming technique is the attempt to deceive the search engine, and ultimately the site visitor, about the true nature of a web site's content.

The question is whether spamming techniques actually deliver any long term benefit. In addition, it is known that using proscribed spamming techniques can get the spammer, their client sites and organizations delisted by the major search engines. It has happened publicly in the past and the search engines particularly Google place great emphasis on their warnings. Google even has a page for reporting spamming offenders. I have identified a list of nine types of illicit SEO or spamming techniqu es.

  1. Keyword Stuffing
  2. Cloaking
  3. Doorway Sites
  4. Throwaway sites
  5. Mirror Sites

Keyword Stuffing

Keyword stuffing is the technique of excessively using lots of keywords with express intention of influencing the search engines. Quite often this use appears in an incomprehensible or ungrammatical manner. Keyword stuffing is often used in conjunction with other spamming techniques such as cloaking, doorway sites, hidden text and tiny text.

Cloaking

Cloaking is the technique whereby the web site visible to a site visitor is entirely different from that seen by a search engine spider. The ordinary user may see one set of text and images but underneath that image, or "cloak", the site is "stuffed" with keywords. By examining the cache of a cloaked site on the Google search results, we can see that the site shows entirely different information to the spider, from that shown to the human eye.

Doorway Sites

A doorway site is a site that acts as a referring page for another site. The doorway page is highly optimized containing hidden links and keywords that the ordinary web user never sees. The doorway site then climbs the search engine rankings but re-directs all of its traffic to the target and perhaps poorly optimized site

Throwaway Sites

Throwaway sites are almost always doorway sites. They are web sites built by spammers to provide a short-term and artificial boost to traffic. Once their traffic objectives are achieved they are often switched off or left to decay hence throwaway. Throwaway sites are stuffed with links and keywords to attract and then re-direct traffic to a target web site. Typically, the spammers retain ownership of the throwaway domain. The spammers' clients initially receive large amounts of traffic. But once the throwaway site is switched off or thrown away the traffic comes to an abrupt halt and the clients business suffers. The clients are then effectively blackmailed into spending vast sums to retain traffic. The target web site receives no long term ranking benefits.

Mirror Sites

Mirror sites use an alternative URL to the target site but contain identical content. With automated page production, there may be hundreds of different URLs all with the same content. This technique is sometimes referred to as domain duplication.

Hidden Text

The technique here is to fill or "stuff" a page with keywords invisible to the naked eye. This is done by using the same colour for text as for the background page. This technique is sometimes referred to as WOW, short for white on white.

Tiny Text

Tiny text is a technique of using very small text that is barely visible to the human eye. This text can be read by the engines. However, the engines will also attr ibute this text as spam.

Link Spamming

In many respects, due to the increasing influence of links, it was inevitable that link spamming would become an issue. Spamming of links has been a growing problem as many people have realized the importance that Google, in particular, places on links. As a significant issue it raised its head in April 2005 when Google's new release appeared to ban one of the leading SEO firms from its rankings. Few people outside of Google and the SEO firm concerned are entirely sure why this is the case. But the industry consensus is that Google are cracking down on web sites and organizations that accumulate vast numbers of irrelevant links with the sole intention of climbing the rankings.

Comment Spam

Related to link spamming is comment spam. Comment spam is where a spammer visits a publicly accessible site and deposits a comment with an anchor text link back to a designated site. Forums and blogs are typical target. This activity became identified as a major problem in January 2005 when Google took steps to prevent it from the blogs of Blogger.com. The reason was that spammers working for so called PPC (Pills, Porn and Casino) web sites were trawling legitimate blogs and posting uninvited comment advertisements with their web site's anchor text. Blogs were vulnerable because they typically possess a comment section that can be accessed without the need for passwords or even registration.

What is Dofollow and Nofollow Links?

The original idea with nofollow was to reduce comment spam on blogs. In 2005 Google’s Mat Cutts and Blogger’s Jason Shellen proposed a way to address the problem with spam comments and the result was the nofollow attribute that can be added to links in a webpage.

This makes no sense to you if you don’t know what a link looks like in HTML, so lets look at what a simple link looks like in the HTML source code of a webpage.

Dofollow is the opposite of nofollow. It’s a standard link with no “nofollow” tag added. A link that will pass link juice and that is good for your search engine rankings if it points your way. It’s just easier to call it a “dofollow link” than to say “a link with no nofollow tag”, don’t you agree?

1. Submitting your site to the major online search engine directories such as Yahoo! and Dmoz.org. When you have your link in these websites, your site value will automatically increase.

2. Submit articles to articles directories. There are so many article directories you can submit your article to which will provide you with a back link to your website. Again, as I’ve commented before, if you are submitting manually, still stick to the key directories – that’s where the traffic and ultimately the links will come from.

You can be sure that if it contains quality content someone will click and link back to you. Also bear in mind that by submitting your articles many other website owners looking for quality content will have your article syndicated to them by the directories and in turn your resource box will contain your links back to your website. So, over time you could quite easily have a number of sites featuring your material all linking back to you. This is the power of article marketing.

3. Another way to get one-way links is to search for industry specific search directories and submit your websites to them. There are search directories that are tailored for specific industries e.g. Travel. Getting listed on these directories may be free or at a fee, so you’ll have to decide the worth if you need to pay for it.

4. Create e-books and short reports. When you create e-books and short reports, these can be given away free on the Internet through your website or other avenues. If the e-book has high quality information within it (e.g. Quick hints and tips), you can attract a lot of one-way links over time. You also have the opportunity of a really good report possibly going viral – being passed on to others, friends etc. To achieve that objective, you should include your website on the pages of the e-book or report and embed links within the text.

5. Use videos. Video is a great way to get one-way links to your site. A good video will move around very fast over the Internet. Many Website owners often take an already created video and embed it in their own site to add content and improve the overall design and look.

6. If you have a website that is good and you are confident that it will appeal to other website owners in a similar niche as yours, you can approach them and ask to have your link included on their site. However, the reason why this method should not always be relied on is that more times than not they will demand a reciprocal link. Now this can be ok but unfortunately human nature being what it is people don’t always keep their promises, so just a heads up there.

Top Tip – Also search engines, especially Google, frown on sites with too many reciprocal links. Therefore, although back links are good, if the basis of the link is always reciprocal, it might not achieve the desired result and can actually damage your rankings if you are not careful.

List Building – Are Lists In The Billions Possible?

Computers combined with the Internet have made building huge lists, not only very common, but also much easier than in the past. Of course, it does help if you’re a well known celebrity or have a well known brand name. Lady GaGa just passed 10 million followers on Twitter, putting Ashton Kutcher to shame with around 7 million and leaving Google in the dust which has a mere 3 million followers.

However, Google would probably be your best bet if you want to argue that lists in the billions are definitely possible. Just consider all the people who use Gmail, Google Accounts, iGoogle, ChromeBrowser, Chromebook, YouTube… and all the other countless programs and sites Google controls and collects contact information from its users. Of course, only Google knows the exact numbers, but you would probably end up counting a lot of zeros.

Then you have to consider other major list builders on the web such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn… all of these are racking up impressive numbers and bringing up the value of their stocks in the process. In actual fact, it could be argued that the company which ends up with the most people on their list will be the ultimate winner on the web. The advertising and marketing power of having a detailed profile (with all the contact and background information, buying habits and even credit scores) on hundreds of millions or even billions of Internet users is simply priceless.

One sometimes gets the feeling that the average person on the street has no idea how priceless these lists really are? They simply don’t realize how economically valuable having all this information at your disposal can be AND how having permission to email, phone or write to these members or contacts can be used to your advantage? Unless you have seen these economic benefits first-hand and in practice, you will not be able to fully grasp the significance or the true power of list building.

And we are not just talking about big name multinational companies here, the same applies to any small business owner or webmaster. Building your contact list can prove very beneficial and worthwhile. Even building a community around your site or blog can prove very helpful when it comes to building traffic, gaining backlinks and improving your sales. Mainly because, as any marketer will tell you, having a ready list of targeted potential customers for your products or services will improve your bottom line. A list of repeat customers is worth its weight in gold.

But how realistic is it for the average marketer or webmaster to build a list in the thousands or even millions? That answer will depend on how much traffic you’re currently getting with your site or sites? If you have a steady flow of targeted traffic then building a list in the thousands will be quite easy, most times it will simply mean placing a subscribe form/box on all your webpages. Add a free ebook, ecourse or report and you will probably double those numbers. Actively building your list with article marketing, co-op list building, videos…will push those subscription numbers even higher.

Actually, building lists in the millions, is not out of the question. There are plenty of pimple-faced teenagers on YouTube and Twitter who have millions of subscribers or followers. And while these third-party sites are not ideal, they do make list building relatively simple and easy. In the case of YouTube, you do have a lucrative income stream (Google Adsense) already built into the system.

However, as every list builder knows, you shouldn’t get hung up on the numbers. It is not the size of your list which counts, but how effective you are at building a responsive relationship with your subscribers. For example, if you have a list of 10,000 and 10% buy your product or click your link then that’s as good as having a list of 100,000 where only 1% buy your product or click your link.

The same goes for a list in the billions, it will be the effectiveness of these lists which will be the key to their worth. In the coming years, one would imagine that a Google or a Microsoft will know how to handle and market these lists of billions. Fortunes could even rise or fall on how well these relationships are built and nurtured. If you don’t believe any of this is possible, then you still have a lot to learn about list building.
